Brooklyn, NY Moving Tips

Have you found your dream home and are ready to begin the moving process? Moving is quite the endeavor, but we have some tips that will make moving a breeze!

Before You Move

Moving is a huge task that many people dread—however, there are many positives to moving into a new home. A new place, a fresh start, and a chance to redecorate your new place if you so choose! To get started off on the right foot, it is a good idea to prepare for your move early.

Time to clean!

Whether you move in the spring, summer, fall, or winter, you should spend some time cleaning out any clothes, furniture, and decorations that you have been meaning to get rid of for a while. Reorganizing and decluttering your space will mean fewer boxes to take! Donate any items to charitable organizations like the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

Plan ahead

Moving to Brooklyn is no easy feat, and we highly recommend determining a plan prior to moving day. Are you planning on hiring a moving company to help you transition into your new space? Or do you plan to rent a truck and move your own things? With either of these options, it is important to book trucks or companies as early as possible, especially if you’re moving in peak season.

Notify important offices

Before you move, alert any important service providers of your address change. This includes utilities, doctor’s offices, employers, and anywhere else that bills you regularly. Doing this prior to your move will limit any missed mail that may occur during this transitional time.

Handy Packing Tips

  • Pack Sturdy: Reinforce any boxes to make sure they are sturdy and reinforced to prevent items from breaking.
  • Get Creative: Now is the time to get creative… with your packing, that is! Utilize household items as an additional way to pack your things. Blankets or other soft linens make great surfaces to wrap wine glasses and china!
  • Don’t forget to pack light: don’t load down boxes in an attempt to minimize the number of boxes you have. It would be better to pack more boxes so as not to break the box or items in each individual box.
  • Label: Label each of your boxes so you know which box goes where. This will make unpacking a lot easier!

On Moving Day

The first day of the next chapter in your new home is an exciting day, and our team is here to make sure this is an easy process for you!

Keep important information handy

During this time, you will have plenty of people contacting you to assist you in your upcoming move. It is important to keep track of all of your documents in order to have easy access should there be any issues. You also will want to keep medication, financial, and medical records close. In addition, to all of these important records, make sure to know where all of your valuables are at all times. Consider moving these yourself so they do not get lost in the midst of moving day!

Pack an overnight bag

Prepare for the unexpected. Sometimes there are delays with moving trucks or unpacking everything doesn’t go as smoothly as anticipated. It is a good idea to have overnight clothes and any toiletries you may need, just in case.

Have important contacts readily available

Not only will lots of people be contacting you regarding the coordination of your move, but you will need to contact people as well. Having the numbers of those contacts readily accessible will ease some of the stress that comes with moving.

After You Move

Congratulations! You have successfully relocated to Brooklyn. Now it is time to enjoy your new home and the new views.

Deep clean your new home

Deep cleaning your new place is a good idea prior to moving in all of your new furniture in. It may be a good idea to contact a local professional cleaning company in Brooklyn to take one thing off your list of things to do. Investing in a clean home is a great step to having a fresh start!

Take it step by step

Now that you have all of your boxes and things in your new place, now comes unpacking and organizing. Working room by room and beginning with essential areas is a great plan to tackle all of the unpacked boxes. The kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom may be the best places for you to start!

Enjoy!

Moving is a daunting task, but the good news is now you’ve finished! Take the time to enjoy your new home and explore all that Brooklyn and New York City have to offer!
